My Exploratory Movement classes incorporate varied movements that many of us are lacking with our modern lifestyles. Our bodies adapt to what we do all day and most frequently, including sitting in chairs a large percentage of the day, use of computers, the shoes we wear, the stress we are under, the sedentary lifestyles, lack of time spent in nature, repetitive body positions and cultural ideas about posture and movement. Fortunately, though we will always live in this modern world, our bodies can continue to adapt and respond positively to new and novel input, even in small and gradual dosages! Learning to develop habits of moving more throughout the day in different parts of your body can bring improved body awareness, circulation, decreased pain and lasting health changes. Even just short "breathing breaks" to focus on relaxed, slowed breathing can be a type of movement break.
My classes and sessions use sometimes differently aligned body positions, basic yoga poses, novel exploratory exercises and awareness about movement or tension habits so that we can journey toward a life with less pain and more fully connecting with our bodies. In addition, we will explore the reflexive use of the core (the diaphragm, pelvic floor, deep abdominals and other muscles) and bring that into movement. You will learn how to "feel your body better" in order to will help your body to feel better.
What is a session or class like? It will be different than any other class you have participated in! Be prepared to learn a whole new paradigm of exploring movement . We use yoga mats (bring your own if you have one), and props such as bolsters, blocks, straps and half domes. In the nicer weather, classes may be outdoors, including on area trails. Whole body movement principles are a part of every class as we work on seldom used movement patterns and muscles, from your toes to your neck and jaw. You will learn to notice and let go of unneeded tension in various muscle groups and you will be introduced to other muscles that you didn’t even know you had! This is not just an exercise class— we explore the body, breath, learn about pain and talk about real life application. Most people leave class feeling relaxed and renewed.
